Allegory - 36" X 30" Acrylic on canvas by John Newell, 0ct 3, 2003

LET IT BE depicts a Buckeye butterfly, representative of species not considered to be endangered but losing habitat at an alarming rate due to fragmentation. The border is blue (sky) at the top, fading to green (plant life) at the bottom and rendered in a choppy style with palette knife using interference colours representing environmental degradation. The "broken" aspect of the border and background symbolizing the fragmentation of wildlife habitat and populations that are becoming more and more isolated due to human activity. All that needs to happen to ensure the survival of many of these species, Buckeyes included, is for their habitats to be left alone, thus the script in the painting: LET IT BE, based on the Beatles song that was universally subscribed to by my generation. This painting reveals the hypocrisy of real estate developers and business interests in general which ultimately are driven by people who sing the song without a word of it sinking in.
