Let It Be

Post by Mauveduh » Sun Mar 13, 2016 2:40 pm

Painting

Pic Description: Allegory - 36" X 30" Acrylic on canvas by John Newell

LET IT BE depicts a Buckeye butterfly, representative of species not considered to be endangered but losing habitat at an alarming rate due to fragmentation. The border is blue (sky) at the top, fading to green (plant life) at the bottom and rendered in a choppy style with palette knife using interference colours representing environmental degradation. The "broken" aspect of the border and background symbolizing the fragmentation of wildlife habitat and populations that are becoming more and more isolated due to human activity. All that needs to happen to ensure the survival of many of these species, Buckeyes included, is for their habitats to be left alone, thus the script in the painting: LET IT BE, based on the Beatles song that was universally subscribed to by my generation. This painting reveals the hypocrisy of real estate developers and business interests in general which ultimately are driven by people who sing the song without a word of it sinking in.

My impression:

The vibrancy of hue on the wings of the butterfly project the energy and life that is still very much evident in this paradoxical waning breed; so full of life, yet dying a slow death with every passing moment. This inherent strength is seen in the voluminous mass of the body, created by a rich chiaroscuro of deep black to sienna.

The singular nature of the object, created by the size and central position on the canvas echo the value of a single commodity reflected in the laws of supply and demand. The numbers diminish, thus the value increases, just as the value of our natural resources become more precious as we witness their impending extinction.

An ethereal quality is suggested with a background of transparent layers of thinly veiled paint, layered in random and unrefined swatches of cool, passive color. The light of the canvas below shows through to create the atmospheric and transcendent nature of that which is temporary.

The antithesis is seen in the warm, weighted form that sits in the center, yet its vulnerability is conveyed in the curve of the wings that sit quietly resting in a protective conservation of life force. The symbolic, kinetic flight to freedom of this species is absent as the strength seems to quietly bleed from beneath in the shadow that flows horizontally off each edge like a stream.

There is a soft and quiet elegance in this painting that covets an intensely powerful force in the struggle to survive. The juxtaposition of the opposing forces intensifies their differences, yet features the interdependence of one on the other. Their uniqueness enhances the value of each. One will not be the same without the other. The vibrancy of hue will not burn as bright without the soft pillow of space that surrounds it, just as beauty and value are compounded in the vulnerability that comes with loss.

Very nice.
