Friends of Extinction

Post by Mauveduh » Fri Jul 08, 2005 6:13 pm

This is another painting by artist and environmentalist, John Newell. John is not one to hold back his opinions and take action to bring about change. He takes the same approach in his imagery.

"This painting kind of tells the story of what is going on here in Pickering, Ontario. Big Jet coming in for a landing from behind a Great Blue Heron standing on its nest in the Heron Rookery - a unique local feature that will be wiped out if the airport goes in. The heron isn't really a heron at all. It's a heron painted over a popular real estate sign cut out to look like a heron. If you look closely you will see the bird droppings sliding down his back. He also has three legs, the third a prop to hold him in place. All of the twigs in the nest have the names of prominent politicians on them who are pro-development as well as aspects of the issue ie: 2050 - the accepted drop dead date for mass extinction on planet earth as proclaimed in the media by 1,360 scientists in 95 countries.

The spiral in the jet engine's turbo fan is a mockery of the Great Spiral, worshipped by many aboriginal cultures. In this painting, it is ironically, the harbinger of doom, and rightly so as the exhaust from jet aircraft is the main engine of destruction that sparked this round of extinction - the sixth."
-John Newell
