How's your spelling?

Post by Mauveduh » Fri May 07, 2004 9:54 pm

Here are the 100 words most often misspelled ('misspell' is one of them).

The YourDictionary site boasts that if you master the orthography of the words on this page that you will reduce the time you spend searching dictionaries by 50%. What does orthanography mean?

Orthanography: The art or practice of writing words with the proper letters, according to standard usage; conventionally correct spelling; also, mode of spelling; as, his orthography is vicious.

Still don't know what orthanography means? Oh well, read on....

If you have trouble with any of these specific words, check the corresponding tip that may help at: http://yourdictionary.com/library/misspelled.html.

See the first example below for how the tips work.

Well, you had me on this one so I looked up bellwether. Here are a few definitions.

A stock on the market that tells you which direction the market is going in or is likely to go in. Comes from the concept of the leading sheep in a flock, the one that wears the bell

A leading indicator of trends. A bellwether stock is a stock which is used to gauge the performance of the market in general. General Motors is an example of bellwether stock in the past. Hence the saying "What's good for GM is good for America".

An established stock market leader. IBM, Microsoft, and General Motors are stocks commonly referred to as bellwethers.

what?...togather is not on there! I mis spell that one on a daily basis. Of course you have the together or the togather. Either way I miss the mark each and everytime!

Of course believe is a bummer as well. One must go back to the i before e theory to get simular words such as believe ..right.

My girlfriend spells thanks....thankx. Of course if you spell phonetically, then there will be a million words that you misspell.

You mean "i before e except after c". Not much good for weight, freight, height, etc. but otherwise a great rule... ~!@

That rule (i before e) has saved me so many times I can't even tell you, even with those exceptions.

I don't even try to guess any more. If I have the slightest doubt, I will reach for the dictionary.

Funny how we deal with spelling now. I rarely use a dictionary as I'm usually typing rather then writing. I will open a page in Word and type the word to see if the red line appears under it to indicate an incorrect spelling.

I also occasionally look up a word definition in Google.

I wonder if I even know how to write with a pen or pencil. I forget. I also used to draw all of the time but now most of it is done on the computer. I'm getting nostalgic for my pencil. I can see it now when I have grandchildren when I tell them about a thing called a pencil. They will look at me like I'm crazy and roll their eyes.
